Tokyo,Japan / 2014 / Renovation

Renovation of a 45-years old room made from reinforced concrete. Instead of undertaking an excessive renovation on an aging structure, it was decided that adding a minimal amount of reinforcement and reducing stress on the structure were the best options for the building’s remaining life. For the purpose of reducing the weight, all of the floor, walls, ceiling and furniture were removed, except for shoji and cupboard that were in a good condition. In place of these, light-weight insulation and urethane foam were fixed and finished. By shrouding the space with the urethane-foam – with its bubble-like texture – the space was converted into a light, airy one. The aged objects in this space are used with care until its end.
